Project: The Next Rembrandt

For this assignment, I researched an art project called “The Next Rembrandt”, which uses machine learning to create a new painting in the style of the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn.

Project Overview

The Next Rembrandt is a creative and artistic machine learning experiment that uses AI to generate a completely new image that looks like a painting by Rembrandt. It was developed by a team of data scientists, engineers, and art historians as a collaboration between ING, Microsoft, Delft University of Technology, and advertising agency J. Walter Thompson Amsterdam.

Instead of having an artist physically paint a new work, the team used machine learning to “learn” Rembrandt’s style and produce a new piece of art that mimics his techniques.

What Type of Machine Learning Models Were Used?

The project used convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for image analysis and generation. Specifically:

The models learned patterns common across Rembrandt’s works so they could be used to generate new content.

The final output combined:

What Data Might Have Been Used to Train the Model?

The machine learning model was trained on a dataset composed of:

The training dataset likely included hundreds of Rembrandt images from museum archives and online databases.
