Challenge: Unifying Fragmented Finance and Lifestyle Services
In East Africa, digital payments were characterized by fragmentation, costly transactions, and complex user flows (e.g., clunky USSD prompts). Pesapal aimed to transition from a traditional payment gateway to the region's first WeChat-inspired Super-App, Pesapal Mobile.
The core challenge was to design a unified, intuitive, and scalable ecosystem that could consolidate diverse financial and lifestyle services (payments, bills, airtime, events) into a single, fee-free platform. This required solving for critical user pain points:
- Eliminating the need to memorize account numbers and navigate inconsistent legacy payment flows.
- Delivering a seamless, consistent UX across both Android and iOS.
- Building an architecture that could rapidly scale across diverse regional markets.
Results: Pioneering Market Adoption and Strategic Alignment
Pesapal Mobile was hailed as a trailblazer, successfully unifying diverse verticals—including payments, food delivery, events, travel, and lending—into one cohesive experience, fundamentally redefining the company as a lifestyle and finance hub.
- Market Penetration: The app achieved Significant Early Market Adoption and was praised by users for its Zero-Fee Transaction Model, directly addressing a major competitor pain point.
- Internal Efficiency: High-fidelity prototyping and design documentation significantly enhanced internal alignment across product, engineering, and business teams, leading to faster consensus on roadmap priorities.

My Approach: Architecture, Iteration, and Cognitive Load Reduction
Strategic Foundation and Business Alignment: I launched the initiative by collaborating closely with the CEO and Product Manager to align on the core Super-App vision and technical constraints.
- Action: Research involved cross-industry benchmarking against successful super-apps and interviews, which highlighted that user frustration stemmed from fragmentation and friction, not a lack of services.
- Outcome: I made the strategic decision to prioritize a truly unified payment journey and single sign-on over optimizing existing fragmented flows, directly attacking the core problem and setting the foundation for the super-app strategy.
Information Architecture for Scalability: To intuitively organize the app's potentially overwhelming breadth of services, I designed an Information Architecture (IA) based on user "need states."
