Let’s start with some background information on why I’ve started this experiment.
When starting my blog, I was initially planning on making posts on how to use colored pencils and alcohol-based markers. But one day I got this idea. What if I would explain how to draw a car?
I tried making a guide based on a photorealistic car I was drawing at the time: a McLaren P1 LM HDK. I quickly learned that my process was way to complex for me to explain in in a simple and easy-to-follow way.
I started experimenting with simplifying my drawing to only alcohol-based markers and drawing them in a more logical and easy-to-explain way. That’s how I created my Lamborghini racecar guide.
After creating it, I let is sit for a while. It quickly became my most popular posts with over 200 monthly pageviews, which was a lot for me back than. So I made more car drawing guides.
After a while, I also started exploring other topics like pokémon, Christmas, animals, etc. After a while, I noticed a pattern. These new guides were doing way better then most of my car drawing guides, so I stopped creating those car drawing guides. They were also by far the most time consuming to make.
The last one I made was published on Jan 15 of this year. But since then, I’ve received some email on why I stopped. I never answered. I didn’t know what to say.
I want to get back into creating car drawing guides again. This experiment is the first step. I want to see if I’ll actually like making those drawing again. And if I do, I might turn some of them into step-by-step guides.
For now, I will write updates on how this experiment is going. You can find them below (when I make them).
Before starting this project, I had already saved some photos on Pexels and Unsplash of cars that I liked. And when I saw this photo of a yellow Porsche 911 GT2 RS, I knew this was going to be the first one. I love how Porsches look from the back, especially the taillights. And this yellow color and the contrast made this car look so good.

I hadn’t drawn a car in so long and for this 10 week challenge I wanted to be able to turn these drawings into step-by-step guides. So I had to photograph every step of the process.
This added a lot of pressure for me, so I decided to first sketch the car just for me and then I would resketch the whole car, but this time I would photograph every step. This alleviated a lot of the pressure. I was also planning to do the same with the coloring, but I felt more confident with that so I did that in one go. It turned out pretty well.
This drawing took me 4 days in total to make and I made 187 pictures of all the steps. Maybe a little bit too many. But better to have too many than to few, right?
Honestly, I thought creating these drawings would be easier and less time consuming. The drawings I made for my blog took me one day to make. This one took four. Maybe I’m just a little rusty and the next ones will go smoother.
But overall, I’m really happy with how this drawing turned out and it was a lot of fun to make. More fun than to draw Santa. That’s for sure.
