About Headspace

🧘 Core Strength: Courses That Build A Skill, Session By Session

Headspace's mission is "to improve the health and happiness of the world" (Headspace press release). Today the app offers more than 500 guided meditations (Google Play), has been downloaded an estimated 84.7 million times (AppMagic data via Udonis), and holds a 4.8 rating from about 974K ratings on the App Store (App Store).

Much of that value is delivered through courses: more than 50 structured programs of around 10 sessions each, where every session builds on the one before (ChoosingTherapy review). A course only works when the member comes back for the next session.

📈 2026: A Growing Market Where Keeping Members Matters More

The meditation app market is growing. Grand View Research estimates it at USD 2.2 billion in 2025 and projects USD 7.0 billion by 2033, a 14.7% compound annual growth rate (Grand View Research).

Inside that growing market, Headspace's yearly downloads have settled below their 2018 peak, so more of its growth depends on members who stay:

Metric Estimate Source
Yearly downloads, 2018 (peak) 14.4M AppMagic data via Udonis
Yearly downloads, 2025 3.5M AppMagic data via Udonis
Members still active on day 1, day 7, and day 30 after install 30.2%, 12.1%, 6.3% AppMagic data via Udonis

These are third-party estimates based on app-store data, not official Headspace figures.

🧠 The Direction: A Care Model That Remembers Each Member

On October 1, 2026, Sword completed its acquisition of Headspace (Headspace Help Center). In the announcement, both CEOs described the future of the product with the same phrase:

"Joining Sword gives us the platform to extend that mission with a care model that understands each person individually, remembers their history, adapts continuously, and brings in a human clinician when it is needed." Tom Pickett, CEO of Headspace (Sword newsroom, September 16, 2026)

"We are pioneering a new model of mental health care that understands each person, remembers their history, and anticipates their needs, 24/7." Virgílio Bento, Founder and CEO of Sword (Sword newsroom, September 16, 2026)

The same announcement says Headspace's platform will gain "more personalization, earlier identification of member needs, seamless navigation, and continuous support across the mental health journey" (Sword newsroom).

Remembering a member's history can start with the simplest history there is: what they listened to last, and what comes next.

🗺️ Current Workflow: 2 Member Types, 2 Journeys

👤 Members who come for a single session can open the app and press play on one of the daily picks under "Your essentials".

👤 Members who come to continue a course have a harder time. In my own test on iPhone (October 2026), I stopped a course session about a minute and a half in, closed the app, and reopened it. The Today tab has a Recents shortcut, and that is the way back to what I played: my session was listed there. But two things were missing. Opening the session from Recents restarted it from 0:00, and the list did not say which course the session belongs to. To find that out, I had to leave Recents and look the course up in Explore. The course page does mark the session I am on, so the information already exists, just not in the place members return to.
