I — Introduction

The Freedom Department exists to protect and balance self-expression with community safety in Bangwing IN. These guidelines ensure every member can express themselves authentically while maintaining the family-friendly, safe environment that defines this community.

Freedom does not mean unlimited speech — it means responsible expression that respects others and upholds the values that make Bangwing IN welcoming for minors and diverse individuals.

II — Core Principles

# Principle Summary
1 Respectful Self-Expression Members may share opinions, beliefs, and ideas freely — provided expression does not degrade or vilify others based on protected characteristics.
2 Balanced Freedom and Safety Freedom ends where harm begins. Speech that threatens, harasses, promotes violence, or violates consent is not protected.
3 Context-Aware Moderation Context matters. Satire and educational content may be granted exceptions when intent is clear and no harm results.
4 No Retaliation for Good-Faith Expression Members using proper channels to raise concerns, file complaints, or participate in appeals are protected from retaliation.
5 Member Feedback Members may submit feedback through designated channels. Final authority on all decisions rests with the governance structure.

III — Rules

All rules apply at all times. Ignorance of a rule does not exempt a member from consequences. Intent is considered in determining severity of response — but does not determine whether a rule applies.

Rule 1 — Express, Don't Oppress

Members may share personal beliefs, political opinions, religious views, and creative content as long as it does not degrade protected groups or violate other server rules. Disagreement is allowed; dehumanization is not. Protected characteristics include, but are not limited to: race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and nationality.

Category Details
Allowed "I believe (political party) has better economic policies" · "My faith teaches (religious principle)" · "I prefer (music genre/game/hobby) over others" · Constructive criticism of public figures, systems, or ideas
Prohibited Slurs, hate symbols, or language targeting protected characteristics · Bad-faith denial or trivialization of documented historical atrocities (e.g., genocides, ethnic cleansings) · Statements promoting violence against any group · Content that demeans or dehumanizes individuals based on protected characteristics
Prohibited (Absolute) Slurs, hate symbols, or content that explicitly calls for harm, discrimination, or violence against any individual or group based on protected characteristics · Any content that sexualizes, endangers, or targets minors under any framing
Consequences First violation — content removal and formal warning · Repeated or escalating violations — progressive timeouts (1 hour → 24 hours → 7 days) · Severe or deliberate hate speech targeting individuals — immediate extended timeout or permanent ban · Severity is assessed based on intent, pattern, and impact
Exceptions Academic or educational quotation of slurs strictly for the purpose of historical discussion or critical analysis — only with explicit prior approval from a moderator and appropriate contextual framing
Moderation Action Reasons Do not post content that degrades, dehumanizes, or targets individuals or groups based on protected characteristics — including race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or nationality. This applies across all channels, content formats (text, images, memes, links, and voice), and contexts.
