Years before the story, Mei and Rei were found wandering alone in terrible condition. Mei was severely ill. Rei, already dangerously malnourished, carried her despite barely being able to remain conscious himself.
He continued until his body finally failed.
Maven found the twins after their collapse. She treated Mei's illness, restored Rei from starvation and exhaustion, and refused to abandon them once they were stable. What began as an emergency rescue became permanent guardianship.
Growing up beside Maven exposed both twins to medicine, anatomy, alchemy, field treatment, and magical healing. Mei developed an intense fascination with the details hidden inside symptoms. Having once been the child whose body was failing while she could do nothing about it, she became determined never to remain ignorant of what was happening inside another person.
Her inability to speak never diminished that ambition. She learned sign language and developed an unusually expressive physical vocabulary. Rei learned every variation of it. After years together, the twins can read one another so well that outsiders often mistake their synchronization for telepathy.
