Rei's earliest defining memory is weight.
Mei's body on his back. Hunger tearing through his stomach. Rain. Mud. The knowledge that if he stopped walking, his sister might die.
When the twins were found, Mei was severely ill and Rei was profoundly malnourished from carrying her while neglecting his own survival. Even after collapsing, he had repeatedly tried to stand again.
Maven treated both of them and eventually took responsibility for their care. Rei never forgot what it meant to be physically unable to save someone he loved. That memory shaped his entire medical philosophy.
