This month
- [ ] Fri Oct 9. Call NRCS before the cutoff. Calhoun office: (706) 307-7614. State office: 706-546-2272. Ask three things. Can a place like ours apply? Can you take form CPA-1200 today? When are contracts from this round signed?
- [ ] This week. Look at your tax bill. Pickens or Cherokee decides which county offices apply.
- [ ] This week. Look at the barn's low side, and book the engineer. Cracks in the slab, posts out of plumb, a bulge or a fresh crack in the slope: any of these, and the engineer comes first.
- [ ] This week. Check three pins, drag one. The Google Earth file shows the well, the septic tank and the pens where your words put them. Tape 100 ft from the well casing to the nearest pen fence.
- [ ] This week. Find what is buried. Septic permit drawing from Pickens Environmental Health, 706-253-0900. The plat. A private locator for the lines past the meter. An 811 request.
- [ ] By Oct 31. Rye and straw on every bare bank. Work only where you can stand.
- [ ] This month. Automate the water with a hose. Timer on the barn spigot first, vacuum breaker after it. The plumber checks it before the hose goes on.
- [ ] Next hard rain. Film where the water goes. From a porch, a window or the truck. Stay off the slopes.
- [ ] November. Write to Pickens Planning, 706-253-8850, once the banks are covered.
