The claimant alleges a violation of the NDPR in connection with the online publication of the personal and tax information of Nigerians by the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service (LIRS) on its website and is seeking orders mandating NITDA to fine LIRS as provided under the NDPR to the tune of 2% of their annual gross revenue.
This suit was instituted in 2019 by the Incorporated Trustees of Digital Rights Lawyers Initiative (the “Complainant”) against the Lagos State Inland Revenue Service (”LIRS” or “Respondent”).
The suit is in connection with the online publication of the personal and tax information of Nigerians by the LIRS on its website.
The claimant alleges a violation of the NDPR.
LIRS took remedial action in disabling the portal and pulling the website away from the public domain.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) issued a statement stating that it will investigate the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) and other data controllers for the alleged breach of taxpayers’ data in the state.
The Complainant filed the suit against both LIRS and NITDA on the data breach seeking orders mandating NITDA to fine LIRS as provided under the NDPR to the tune of 2% of their annual gross revenue.
