Follow these steps in order to install Ubuntu in UTM, run the course setup script, and view the TurtleBot3 simulation in RViz. Run all commands inside the Ubuntu VM, not in macOS Terminal.

1. Install UTM on your Mac

Open the UTM for Mac website and click Download. Open the downloaded disk image, drag UTM into Applications, and launch it.

Download UTM from the website. The Windows image is part of the website illustration.

2. Download Ubuntu 22.04 ARM64 Server

Open the Ubuntu 22.04 release page and download 64-bit ARM (ARMv8/AArch64) server install image:

ubuntu-22.04.5-live-server-arm64.iso

Choose the standard ARM64 Server ISO. The script requires Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy). The server installer starts without a desktop; the script installs Ubuntu Desktop later.

Choose the 64-bit ARM (ARMv8/AArch64) server install image.

3. Create the VM

In UTM, select + → Virtualize → Linux, then select the downloaded ISO as the boot image. Use a VM with a graphical display; leave any headless option off.

Suggested starting settings for this course are 4 CPU cores, 8 GB RAM if your Mac has at least 16 GB, and a 64 GB virtual disk. Leave enough memory for macOS; a smaller allocation may make installation and simulation slower. Keep the default shared networking, skip shared folders, name the VM AA174 Ubuntu, and save it.

Click Run to start the VM. UTM's screen order can vary by version; its Ubuntu guide covers the creation and boot process.
