present day - 997 NA

972 NA Calliope is born in a small hamlet in Demacia to an Ionian-Piltovian mother and a Demacian father. For the first few years of Calliope’s life, they live on a small goat farm owned and operated by their family.
982 NA Following the death of Calliope’s father, she and her mother sell the farm and move to the capital so that her mother can make better use of the advanced jewelry making skills she honed growing up in Piltover. The search for opportunity pays off poorly, however, as her mother's perpetual outsider status makes finding customers more difficult without the aid of her Demacian father. Through difficult times, Calliope’s mother reads her popular chapbook tales of knights and heroes. She becomes especially attached to stories about a character known as Elincia: a beautiful, pure maiden who led armies atop a winged mount.
984 NA From watching the processions of Demacian soldiers through the city, Calliope is inspired to pick up the sword herself. She studies the moves of the soldiers and students she can find running drills in public and commits their moves to memory.
987 NA Upon reaching the minimum age, Calliope voluntarily enlists in Demacia’s military cadet program, knowing that she can only do so much self-taught. She continues living with her mother throughout this, but spends most of her time with the other trainees.
988 NA Calliope completes the program with honors and is hand-selected to receive further training simultaneously with actual service for the possibility of higher prestige as a member of the Dauntless Vanguard if she impressed both her instructors in training and her superiors on the battlefield.
989 NA Just months into the program, Calliope gets in a fight with one of the younger trainees who expressed anti-foreigner sentiments. She very publicly strikes the trainee in front of a courtyard of people and is immediately hit with a wave of guilt. She runs away as far as her legs will take her until she ends up on the offskirts of the city. There, she finds a curious steed grazing by a patch of daisies. She approaches it.

The steed, through a psychic connection, introduces itself to her as Mercy and offers to help her rise back into the ranks of Demacia’s military.

In truth, Mercy is a shame demon whose feeding power relies on attaching itself to a specific mark and goading them into doing worse things, feeding on the shame it brings them. This is generally a long-term plan, and Mercy does not (and really, CAN not) change targets while the current one is still alive. | | 990 NA | Together, Mercy and Calliope train until she is honed as sharp as she had once been. With promises of impressing the nobles enough to earn back her name, Mercy convinces Calliope to act as a vigilante, dispatching bandits on the roads surrounding the capital. | | 992 NA | Mercy subtly manipulates Calliope into disliking her appearance, convincing her to dye her hair to better fit the image of the perfect heroine. | | 993 NA | At Mercy’s goading, Calliope kills a bandit captain who had already surrendered. Luckily, no one of importance is around to see it. Although she promises never to do it again, Mercy assures her that should it happen, their partnership would still continue. | | 995 NA | Calliope's vigilantism begins operating on a larger scale as she gets stronger, rushing into battle against whole enemy battalions before they even meet with Demacia's armies. Her activities draw the attention of Demacian military officials, but not in the way she hoped… |
