Dr. Ken Brown here. Most standard labs are looking for disease that is already obvious. These are the labs I like to look at when someone wants to understand what may be building earlier.
This is not a “run everything on everyone” list. It is a better conversation to have with your doctor.
hs-CRP
Checks for low-grade inflammation in the body.
Fasting insulin
Shows how hard your body is working to keep blood sugar normal.
Hemoglobin A1C
Shows your average blood sugar over the last few months.
Ferritin
Shows your stored iron, not just the iron floating in your blood that day.
Iron panel
Looks at iron, iron binding, and saturation to give a fuller picture than ferritin alone.
Vitamin D
Checks vitamin D status, which matters for bones, immune function, muscles, and overall health.
Vitamin B12
Checks a nutrient important for nerves, energy, red blood cells, and brain function.
Methylmalonic acid
Helps catch functional B12 deficiency when a B12 level alone does not tell the whole story.
Homocysteine
Can point to issues with B vitamins, methylation, and cardiovascular risk.
