The visual language of this platform does not decorate the work — it defers to it.
Hwang Yoo-Yup worked in deep earth tones, thick impasto surfaces, and muted ochres drawn from the Korean agricultural landscape. A platform that surrounded his paintings with clean whites, bright accents, or geometric modernism would contradict the work before a visitor read a single word. The HYY design system was built from the same visual register as the paintings: dark, layered, restrained.
Every color, typographic choice, and component pattern answers the same question: does this serve the work, or distract from it?
Deep Burgundy — #390609
The dominant background throughout the platform. Used across the navigation bar, Journey timeline, Biography, Works Archive, Artwork Detail pages, and footer. This is not black — it carries warmth and weight, evoking aged pigment and archival depth. It is the ground color of the platform.
Earth Red — #6B4447
Secondary background. Used for the Exhibition Plan zone cards (Formation, Displacement), section dividers, and supporting surface areas. Slightly warmer and lighter than Deep Burgundy — creates visual hierarchy without introducing a foreign hue.
Terracotta — #7B3020
Zone-specific color used for Zone 3 (Labor & Land) in the Exhibition Plan. Signals the agricultural and human-labor themes of that zone. Bridges between the deep burgundy of formal sections and the warm earth of the Motifs system.
Dusty Mauve — #8B6B70
Zone 4 (Ritual) treatment. The most restrained and recessive of the zone colors — appropriate for a section about transcendence, endurance, and material persistence across time.

Warm Taupe — #BEB08C
Used exclusively for the Motifs section tojŏng surface and radar chart background. Drawn directly from Hwang's earthen ground technique — tojŏng, the thick soil-like painted surface central to his practice. The taupe section is the most tonally distinct area of the platform, and intentionally so: it signals a shift from historical narrative into material interpretation.
Dark Earth — #5E3D10
Motifs theme card background. Rich, organic, soil-adjacent. The five theme cards (Ox/Cow/Bird · Roads · Labor · Land · Village) sit on this tone — grounding the subjects in the material world they describe.
