Designing a Digital Legacy Platform for Modern Korean Artist Hwang Yoo-Yup

Background

Hwang Yoo-Yup (1916–2010) was a modern Korean painter whose artistic language was shaped by Japanese colonial rule, the Korean War, national division, and postwar reconstruction. His works engage themes of displacement, land, labor, ritual, and continuity. While recognized in Korean art historical circles, his legacy lacks a centralized, structured digital presence that makes his significance legible to international and contemporary audiences.

Existing materials are dispersed across exhibition catalogs, academic texts, institutional holdings, and family archives. Without contextual scaffolding, newer audiences may interpret his restrained and repetitive visual language as static or nostalgic rather than historically grounded and conceptually rigorous.

The project aims to design a digital legacy platform that functions as a long-term interpretive and archival system — not simply an artist portfolio.

Challenge

Designing for legacy differs from designing for promotion. The key challenges were:

• Translating complex historical context into accessible narratives
• Structuring a large, evolving artwork archive
• Supporting both emotional engagement and scholarly research
• Balancing interpretive guidance with historical accuracy
• Establishing credibility for an artist underrecognized internationally
• Designing a system that remains useful beyond a single exhibition cycle

⚠️ The core tension: A promotional site optimizes for impression. This platform had to optimize for trust — across audiences who arrive with completely different expectations and completely different definitions of what credibility looks like.
