按照 Roger Nicole 這篇文章的論證，他認為約翰・加爾文（John Calvin）基本上相信「限定代贖」（limited/definite atonement），雖然他也承認加爾文的著作中存在大量「基督為世人、為所有人而死」的普遍性語言，因此這個問題不能說是毫無爭議。

這篇文章最重要的特色，是 Nicole 不是說加爾文從未使用普遍性的語言，而是認為這些語言必須放在加爾文的整體救恩論、揀選論和基督代求工作中理解。

1. Nicole 自己的結論相當明確

文章一開始就提出問題：

“Does Calvin believe in limited Atonement or not?”

然後說，有些人認為加爾文不相信限定代贖，但 Nicole 認為這種看法是錯的。

更重要的是，他在討論 Curt Daniel 的研究時明確說：

“Daniel’s conclusion is that Calvin held to universal atonement, while I … remain convinced that the balance of evidence favors the opposite view.”

也就是：

Daniel 認為加爾文主張普遍代贖，但 Nicole 仔細研究之後，仍認為證據的整體平衡支持相反的結論——即加爾文比較接近限定／特定代贖。

2. 但問題非常複雜：加爾文確實大量使用「全世界」「所有人」的語言

這也是為甚麼學者會有不同結論。

Nicole 列出很多加爾文的話，例如：

“Christ suffered ‘for the redemption of mankind’”

以及：

“for the salvation of the human race.”

甚至：

“all the sins of the world have been expiated.”
