This report examines the effectiveness of different types of graphs—bar graphs and line graphs—in representing data sets with categorical vs categorical variables. Two examples are provided to illustrate the appropriate use of each graph type.
Example 1: Education Level vs. Age
In this example, the relationship between education level and age is analyzed. There 9 education levels and their distribution across different ages Initially, a bar graph was used to represent the data. However, the bar graph did not clearly show the trend that education level increases with age.
To better illustrate this trend, a line graph was employed. The line graph effectively displayed a trend line, making it easier to observe the increase in education level with age.


Example 2: Type of Employment vs. Age
The second example involves five categories of employment types and their distribution across different ages. Here, a bar graph was found to be more suitable. Unlike the previous example, a line graph did not reveal any discernible pattern in the data. The bar graph, on the other hand, provided a clear comparison of employment types across different age groups.


The choice of graph type significantly impacts the clarity and effectiveness of data presentation. For data sets where a trend needs to be highlighted, such as education level vs. age, a line graph is more appropriate. Conversely, for categorical comparisons, such as employment type vs. age, a bar graph is more effective.
