Role overview
The Community Lead will own and grow the Bold Cause online community across Africa by managing our community spaces, The Directive newsletter, and our social media platforms. This role is fully remote and hands-on: you will plan and publish engaging content, run online activities, and build relationships that increase participation, retention, and advocacy.
Key responsibilities
- Community strategy & growth
- Develop and execute a community engagement strategy aligned to Bold Cause’s mission and annual goals.
- Define target member segments, community journeys, and engagement loops (onboarding → activation → contribution → advocacy).
- Set quarterly engagement objectives and run experiments to improve participation and retention.
- Content & programming
- Create an editorial calendar spanning community content, online activities, and campaign moments.
- Own end-to-end content execution: creation, design, and publishing across community, newsletter, and social.
- Produce and repurpose content formats (posts, threads, short video scripts, event recaps, member spotlights, toolkits).
- Host and facilitate online activities (AMAs, workshops, challenges, Twitter/X Spaces, webinars, live sessions) across time zones.
- The Directive newsletter
- Own end-to-end production of The Directive: topic selection, contributor coordination, writing/editing, design/layout, publishing/distribution, and performance analysis.
- Build a contributor pipeline (community members, partners, experts) and maintain a consistent voice.
- Grow subscriber list ethically and improve open/click rates through testing and segmentation.
- Social media management
- Manage Bold Cause social channels (platform mix may include LinkedIn, Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook).
- Own social content creation, design, and publishing; respond to comments/DMs; and moderate discussions with clear community guidelines.
- Collaborate with design/video support (if available) to ship high-quality creative.
- Partnerships & member relations
- Build relationships with key community members, ambassadors, and ecosystem partners across Africa.
- Coordinate cross-promotions, co-hosted events, and community collaborations.
- Collect feedback and surface community insights to internal stakeholders.
- Moderation & community care
- Enforce community guidelines, manage sensitive situations, and create a welcoming, inclusive environment.
- Create onboarding materials and community playbooks.
- Analytics & reporting
- Track metrics across community, newsletter, and social platforms.
- Maintain a simple weekly dashboard and a monthly narrative report with insights and recommendations.
Success metrics (examples)
- Community: new member growth, activation rate, weekly/monthly active participants, repeat participation, event attendance.
- Newsletter: subscriber growth, open rate, click-through rate, replies, referrals.
- Social: follower growth, reach, engagement rate, saves/shares, conversions to newsletter/community sign-ups.
Required qualifications
- 3+ years experience in community management, social media, or digital communications (mission-driven or media/community brands preferred).
- Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to adapt tone for Bold Cause and The Directive.
- Demonstrated experience running online events/activities and facilitating discussions.
- Solid understanding of social platform best practices and content trends.
- Comfort using analytics to guide decisions (native platform analytics, newsletter analytics, spreadsheets).
