All right. Well, welcome back to a new year, everybody. Woo-hoo! Veterans over here. So what our focus is for this year, we are doing bigger themes and bigger questions. So we're really focusing on building strong foundations and helping their cubs grow from where they are. I'm putting a bigger emphasis this year on reading and writing, slowing down and making sure that the skills that they're learning, they're truly understanding and they're not just rushing through the books just to move on to the next one.
So some of us are going back and starting over, which is fine, and we're just going to practice making sure our letters look on the appropriate side, and we're going to just make sure our skills are good. Stay curious. We're going to ask questions, share ideas, problem solve, and learn from one another. They learn from each other all the time. So just continuing to ask questions. Grow independence through our hands-on projects.
We have Wonder Circles, which is new this year. We're doing a more Socratic discussion three times a week. And we're going to do collaborations with each other, have experiences, and become more confident, independent, and excited to try new things. So our first session theme is people and places. So session one, we're talking about me, you, and our big world. So they're learning about themselves, each other,
They did a project where they found similarities and differences between a friend and they got up on stage and they presented. Some kids are going to do that tomorrow because they weren't able to do it earlier this week and then they'll have a chance to present. But Declan and Dylan have everything. Yeah, I'm surprised. Everything. Everything. Everything. Practically the same. Good job. So I was like,
Jillian, do you think you'd have the same answer if Isla was your partner? And he was like, "No." So maybe I should have partnered with them together, but I think Isla wasn't there that day. But yeah, so that was just a fun little exercise for them to do. They did self-portraits today. Yeah, and they've just been doing a lot of things about getting to know the newer children and really helping them get comfortable in the studio.
And then session two, we're going to do a little deeper exploration in community, community members, and they're going to build their own 3D community, which is where we need the boxes, the thousand boxes that Iva told you that I need. We're going to make a 3D city. So if you guys have shoe boxes, they have to make their own house. But they also will talk about what is needed in the community. Like, we need a doctor, we need a hospital, we need a police station, we need a fire station.
Maybe they want to park a library. So they have to build all of that. And they're going to make it in 3D form. And then that's what they're going to show you at the showcase.
So you only want small boxes?
Just small boxes. Any size box. We can always break them up because I can cut the bow off. Because I have a lot.

People, Rachel. I saw them. I saw them. the end of session one begins session two. So then after we do that, then you'll have our showcase. Then you'll get your first progress report from the year. So just like a trimester thing now.

And then we'll go into philanthropy. And then we'll go into the built world where we're going to kind of elevate, design, and destroy since they loved it so much. So we're going to destroy and then rebuild it and actually bring it back to life.

I love it. When the whole studio. The roller coaster that's happening? We're not doing that. Oh.

We're going to do something even bigger. I don't know. That's cool. And then we're going to do a little bit of robotics and coding. Coding?
Like you can code little robots and they can move. Yeah. It's actually very, very cool.
Then we'll do Cuppreneur and then session seven is just like a refresher, just like recapping the previous session. Okay. What month is the company? It is, I believe, in May.
It's in May. Oops. So this is the daily schedule. It gives all this to you guys. You can drop off as early as 8.30. Wiggle room is that time, so if they really want to get their wiggles out, bring them in early. And then we start our day at 9.30 with our morning meeting schedule. We do do Socratic discussion three times a week. Mondays and Fridays is in the afternoon. Tuesday we do it in the morning.
That's the only difference there. And then we have Conquer time in the morning where we do reading, writing, and then we do Sumo with Mr. D. And then in the afternoon we do Socratic discussion, handwriting, and then our PBL. Wow. So we also do have PE Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wednesdays is a whole different Wednesday this year. We love PE. And then Friday, it originally was the same as every other Friday.
So we are doing UFLI for reading, Cub Wonder Circle is our psychotic discussion, handwriting, physical education, art with Mercedes. We also do do art on Thursday at 2. Since we do do an artist of each session, I'm focusing on that and we will be doing some of their artwork on Thursday. So it'll be a different art project every Thursday for that.
So they're going to be learning about that. It's very important when we go to Mount Diablo. So we have to have our first day down. So we'll assess it and refine and grow if we need to change anything in January. We'll change things up. But we'll see how it goes. But they had a great time yesterday with gardening with Michelle. And they also did chores in the chicken coop. They fed them worms.
Yeah. Uh-huh. Reading and UFLI. So this is our, UFLI is our reading program. So we're going to do a little mini lesson. Rachel's really eager. I see she got her blending board out. I love it. I did assess all the kids already this week. to see where they fall. Some kids are foundations. The Dezzy's are going to be in foundations. Most of the kids are emerging and then you have like the developed readers which is Aila and Eden are in the developed.
So we'll pretend we're in Declan and Anson's group. Okay. So the Lesson is split into two days. So I start a lesson on Monday and I finish the second part on Tuesday. And we always go and just follow my little PowerPoint slide and we go through it. So we always start with blending a word. So I break down a word and then they have to tell me what that word is. So if I say, "un-real-time" Good job! So we do a couple of those, like four examples, and then they have to show me with their fingers and break down each sound that they hear.
Amazing! So we'll do that and then I'll show them like I'll flash different letters and they have to tell me the sound that the letter makes. So it could be at, it, all, they go through all the vowels. And then I do all the safe sounds for them and they have to write what letter makes that sound. And then we work on our boards. So right now Your kiddos are just working with this side. Eden and Isla get the entrance.
And then on Wednesdays we do our decodables. That's what they love to do. Where... They have to read the story and then they draw a picture that goes along with it. So, and then here they would have to find all the short vowels in the word. So they have to read the story and then they highlight all the words they have. Sometimes I might ask them, can you find me a heart word in there? Like, does a heart word...
Yeah, so they'll find the word. and also do their roll and read. So sometimes they take this home. They love this because they just roll the dice and whatever it lands on, they have to read the word and color it in. And then once it's fully done, I will roll it and they read two rows to me. And then they have to come up with two sentences using a word. Eventually look at some more, but right now they do at least two.
Oh, here we go. So they take them home, they read them in practice. They have this a whole week. So ideally, yeah, they can read each book three times. It just helps reinforce whatever lesson that they're learning. So it's just more repetition. The more repetition, the more they get, and the faster they grasp that skill. So you could read it to them. It has the QR code. If you have a lady, read it to them.
Just practice. And if you need more time with them, just let me know, and we can keep them longer, and I'll just give you the new set when you bring them back. Most lessons, as they get higher up, they only have like 32, a fiction and an author. So handwriting, so this is something I was talking to you guys about that I'm really taking my time with this year and making sure that their handwriting is good and emphasizing quality over speed.
So we've been taking our time writing, not feeding through, making sure we can read what we're writing, finger spacing, size letter formation, that they're using the right pencil grip, all those things that we really So that's why handwriting is in the afternoon and it's a specific time where I'm able to sit with some kids if I need to and help them. And so we also are doing grammar, proper punctuation, capital letters, how to make sentences longer and deeper than I see a dog.
So all the kids this year are getting a building writer's book. This is Eden's book. Nathan started his last year. So this will just help them make their sentences more detailed. So it starts with them just pretty much copying the sentence, and then as it gets more advanced, they have to come up with their own sentences. I see a cow on the farm. So it's more detailed. And then eventually they'll be able to write their own story.
So this kiddo drew us and him. And it's called We See a Gopher Snake. This is us playing outside. We were playing on the ninja set and we got to see a gopher snake outside. So his writing is pretty neat. He does have some grammar errors. So I'll go through it after he did this all on his own. I didn't help him. And so I'll go back and say, oh, how did we start a section? What has to be capital? And he'll say, oh, the T, and he'll change it.
I always encourage them to try on their own because it's them trying to figure out what the word sounds like. It could be wrong, but at least they try on their own and we just go back and we fix it. There's Desi working on his workbook. Socratic discussion. So our Cove Wonder Circle is something that we're starting to really emphasize this year. Just getting them to think a little deeper, to not always have me give them the answer to something, but they're trying to figure out their own answers to things.
So there's not necessarily one correct answer. But asking open-ended questions just to like have discussion and they're also practicing not interrupting when someone is talking how to be a good audience when someone is speaking which is very challenging for us because we all have ideas and want to share a million things. So we're really trying to learn how to have discussion peacefully. It's okay to disagree sometimes and how to have those conversations.
Parent partnerships, so volunteering. I really want you guys to volunteer this year. We're doing a lot of stuff in the studio. So whether it's horsemanship, life skills, field trips, you want to read a story, you want to help during sumo time, conquer time, anything you can teach them a class. Anybody you want to teach about? Amir, you want to? Want to practice hearing heart? Yeah. Art, we're going to be doing a lot of art.
Anything you want? Since we're learning about each other, we are making all about Maybook. So if you want to share like your family tradition, that's those things you guys like to do with the family, you guys can come and talk to them about that. Fridays is still share day, so if they want to bring their share either, they can bring it. With our All About Me book, they will be presenting parts of the book on Friday with the group, or Thursday on the last day.
So I might say, Anson, can you tell me what you drew on your paper of your favorite vacation? And then he'll give you a picture. So with the All About Me book, I may ask you guys to send a family picture or you guys on vacation somewhere, whatever goes along with your book. And you can just text it to me and I'll print it out and we'll distribute it. And that will be presented at their showcase.
