Dawn English Buddy ("Dawn", "we", "us") is a Chrome extension that helps people learning English understand and improve the English on the web pages they visit. This policy explains what information Dawn uses, why, and where it goes.
The short version
- Dawn only looks at your screen when you ask it a question.
- Your screenshot and question are sent to Anthropic's Claude AI service to create the answer, and nowhere else.
- We do not run our own servers, and we do not collect, store, sell or share your data.
- Your settings and saved words stay in your own browser.
What Dawn uses and why
When you ask Dawn a question (by pressing the keyboard shortcut, speaking, or typing), Dawn uses:
- A screenshot of the visible part of the tab you are on
- The question you asked
- Any text you have selected on the page
- The page title and web address
- Your last few questions and answers on that tab, so Dawn can follow up on what you just talked about
This information is sent directly from your browser to Anthropic's Claude API so the AI tutor can see what you are asking about and answer you. It is used only to answer that question.
Dawn never captures your screen in the background. Nothing is captured until you ask a question.
Voice features
- Speaking to Dawn: voice input uses the speech recognition built into Google Chrome. Your voice is processed by Google under Google's own privacy policy. Dawn only receives the text of what you said.
- Dawn speaking to you: answers are read aloud using the voices built into your computer or browser.
