This is the 2026 engineering career path. The active track is Product Engineer, with three levels: L2, L3, and L4. The model removes Junior as a ladder level and moves the center of gravity from narrow software execution toward product judgment, taste, agency, technical depth, and effective AI leverage.

AI makes implementation faster, but it does not make judgment cheaper. The scarce engineering skill at Enginy is not only writing code. It is deciding what matters, simplifying the work, understanding customer value, using AI without outsourcing taste, and shipping reliable product outcomes.
This ladder should therefore evaluate engineers as product engineers: people who can turn ambiguous customer and business problems into valuable, maintainable software.
The ladder still requires strong technical execution. The change is that technical execution is no longer evaluated in isolation from product impact.
| π·οΈ Level | π― Definition | π¦ Expected scope | β Core signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| π¦ L2 Product Engineer | |||
| Reliable feature owner | π― Primary job | ||
| Delivers bounded product work end to end. |
π§ Judgment Understands the user problem, makes reasonable local trade-offs, ships with quality, and uses AI effectively while keeping ownership of the result. | π¦ Scope Small to medium end-to-end product projects, fixes, and product improvements.
πΊοΈ Boundary Scope is bounded, but may span frontend, backend, workflows, integrations, or data as needed. | β Core signal Reliable execution with growing product judgment. | | πͺ L3 Product Engineer Independent product owner | π― Primary job Owns ambiguous product problems across frontend, backend, and systems.
π§ Judgment Pushes back on low-value work, proposes better product and technical paths, raises quality, and mentors others. | π¦ Scope Large features, ambiguous product problems, multi-step product workflows, and meaningful technical improvements.
πΊοΈ Boundary Often spans multiple product surfaces, systems, or product workflows. | β Core signal Independent product ownership with strong taste and technical judgment. | | π© L4 Product Engineer Product engineering leader | π― Primary job Shapes product engineering direction across areas.
π§ Judgment Chooses what matters, aligns product and engineering strategy, drives high-leverage initiatives, and multiplies team output through taste, clarity, and standards. | π¦ Scope Multi-cycle initiatives, product area direction, cross-team architecture and delivery, hiring bar, and product engineering standards.
πΊοΈ Boundary Usually crosses team, roadmap, or system boundaries. | β Core signal Company-level leverage through product judgment, agency, and team multiplication. |
