What this guide is for
- To help you communicate clear, respectful boundaries in a way that fits your voice and values.
- To help you handle common cultural pressures like "don’t make waves", people-pleasing, and being seen as rude.
- To give you scripts you can copy for family, dating, work, and community.
A quick reframe (so boundary-setting feels less “mean”)
A boundary is:
- Information: what you will and will not do.
- A choice: what you will do if the boundary is not respected.
- A kindness: it prevents resentment and confusion.
A boundary is not:
- A debate.
- A request for permission.
- A way to control someone else.
The 3-part boundary formula
Use this simple structure:
- Context (optional): one sentence.
- Boundary: what you need or what you will do.
- Next step: what happens now.
