GTM Engineering in Practice: How I Job Search

I treat my own job search as a GTM motion — sourced, sequenced, and measured like any outbound campaign I'd build for a client, run across LinkedIn and email in parallel, including multi-touch nurture rather than a single send-and-wait message. Below is the live funnel from my outreach tracker — the clearest, most current proof point on this page.

Job Search Metrics

Outreach funnel

Stage Count % of Total Contacted
Companies contacted 117 100%
LinkedIn connections accepted 55 47.0%
Replies received (any response) 43 36.8%
Real next-step conversations (interview, assignment, call, or back-and-forth beyond a single reply) ~20 17.1%
Calls / interviews held ~11 9.4%
Take-home projects / technical evaluations completed ~9 7.7%

Of the 55 people who accepted a LinkedIn connection, roughly 40% went on to reply — modestly above the blended reply rate, showing a warm connection lifts response likelihood but isn't the dominant driver; a meaningful share of replies came through email outreach to prospects who hadn't accepted a LinkedIn connection at all.

Outcomes

Outcome Count % of Total Contacted
Explicit rejections 7 6.0%
Objections raised (location/remote, language, budget/comp, sponsorship) 10 8.5%

What this shows

At 117 companies contacted, a 36.8% reply rate and 47.0% connection-acceptance rate reflect solid top-of-funnel engagement, above typical cold outbound benchmarks. Outreach ran across two channels — LinkedIn connection requests/InMail and direct email — which is part of why a meaningful share of replies came from prospects reached by email even without an accepted LinkedIn connection. A deliberate nurture sequence on both channels — follow-ups and value-add touches sent to prospects who hadn't yet responded — helped lift replies rather than relying on a single cold message. The drop from replies (43) to real next-step conversations (~20) is the healthiest stage in the funnel, converting at roughly 47% — well above typical cold-outbound benchmarks for reply-to-conversation conversion. Further down funnel, of ~20 real conversations, ~11 converted to an actual call or interview and ~9 to a completed technical evaluation — a healthy mid-to-late funnel conversion — with 7 explicit rejections (6.0%) and 10 explicit objections (8.5%) — location/remote mismatch, language requirements, budget or sponsorship gaps — accounting for most of the remaining drop-off. That pattern points to a structural ceiling (role location, sponsorship, and budget constraints) rather than a messaging or positioning problem, which is the same read I'd give a client seeing this shape of funnel.
