Gautama’s Harem

The Textual Numbers: Various later Buddhist biographical texts (such as the Lalitavistara Sūtra and the Mahāvastu) paint a picture of Buddha’s prince life. Some translations or local Asian legends claim his father provided him with a harem of 40,000, 60,000, or up to 84,000 females, out of which 3 main wives- Yashoda, Gopa and Mrigaja

The Lalitavistara Sūtra (Chapter 12 & 13) (Mahayana): Chapter 12 ("The Play in the Women's Quarters") states that King Shuddhodana provided the young prince with an astounding entourage of 84,000 women to completely surround his three seasonal palaces.

The Mahāvastu (Volume II, Chapter: The Great Renunciation): A major text from the early Lokottaravāda school of Buddhism. In J.J. Jones' canonical English translation, the text notes the young prince lived among 60,000 women who "entertained him day and night".
