Anser anser

Britain's original wild goose, and ancestor of the farmyard goose.

Size: 76-89 cm | Habitat: Pond, Lake & River Birds | Season: All year

The largest and bulkiest of the UK's wild geese, the greylag is bulky and grey-brown, with a heavy orange-pink bill and pink legs. It's the ancestor of most domestic geese, and today's UK birds are a mix of native Scottish stock and widely re-established populations further south.

Identification notes

Bulky grey-brown body · thick orange-pink bill · pink legs · pale, frosty leading edge to the wing in flight

Behaviour

Greylags graze in flocks on grass, stubble, and winter cereals, often gathering in large numbers on flooded gravel pits, lakes, and reservoirs, especially outside the breeding season.

Did you know?

Greylag geese are the wild ancestor of almost every breed of domestic goose — humans have been taming them for thousands of years.

🎓 Educational Note

The Greylag Goose (Anser anser) is the largest and bulkiest of Britain's wild geese, with a bulky grey-brown body, heavy orange-pink bill, and pink legs. It is the sole ancestor of nearly all domestic goose breeds, tamed by humans since ancient times.

Greylags have a complicated status in Britain: a small native population survives in north-west Scotland, while the much larger population across the rest of the UK descends from birds reintroduced or escaped from wildfowl collections from the mid-20th century onward. Today's flocks gather year-round on gravel pits, lakes, and reservoirs, especially in southern Britain.

The greylag's mixed native and re-established status is a useful reminder that "wild" and "native" aren't always the same thing in modern Britain — even birds with a long history here can have complicated, human-shaped population stories.

🟠 Conservation status: Amber (UK Birds of Conservation Concern 5)

Amber-listed under BoCC5 due to concerns over the mixing of genuinely wild migratory birds with the larger resident and re-established population, which complicates monitoring of the truly native stock.
