For this group project, I worked with my partner, Kate. We started by discussing the relationship between choices and consequences. Since the assignment asked us to think about how a choice can lead to an unexpected result, we brainstormed several ideas related to uncertainty and chance. Some of our first ideas included a fortune teller, such as tarot cards or drawing lots, and Schrödinger’s cat, where the result is unknown until you make an action or observe it.
Eventually, we decided to create a blind box interaction. We liked this idea because a blind box gives the user a clear choice, but they do not know what the result of that choice will be. The user sees two gift boxes and has to choose one. Each box can lead to a different and potentially surprising outcome, connecting directly to the theme of choices and consequences.
For the visual design, I referenced gift box images I found online and recreated two different presents using simple p5.js shapes. I used rect(), quad(), and other basic shapes to build the boxes, ribbons, patterns, and bows. I wanted the two boxes to look different enough that the player might develop a preference based only on their appearance, even though they do not know what is inside.
