- A held ball occurs when:
- Two opponents have one or both hands firmly on the ball, and neither player can gain possession without rough play.
- A defensive player touches the ball, causing an offensive player to return to the floor during a shot or pass attempt that would otherwise result in a traveling violation.
- Officiating emphasis:
- Do not call a held ball too quickly.
- Have a feel for the game. If play is a bit sloppy, call held balls quicker to prevent rough play and fights. If play is high-level, some plays are strong enough to quickly gain possession and keep the game moving.
- Both players must have clear, firm control.
