  1. text for solo exhibition <Mattress> (2023, Sahngup gallery, Seoul)

Choo Young-jin's work begins with everyday episodes. In his previous solo exhibition, he deliberately employed fragmented language and images to question the process by which they are received by individuals, revealing the inevitable failure of the illusion of a solid combination of image and language. This solo exhibition, <Mattress>, presupposes a daily life where input and output are not identical. A promotional email sent from abroad is transformed into a heartfelt letter inquiring after one's well-being, and a video of a man performing multiple dives is preserved as a low-resolution photograph. Furthermore, a photograph of a man striking a ridiculous pose is severed from its context, rendering its meaning unreadable. These elements mix and decompose, creating a state where “everything is important or unimportant,” leaving behind loose connections to daily life like traces. In “The Task of the Translator,” Walter Benjamin shatters conventional wisdom by pointing out that no hierarchical relationship exists between the original and the translation. He argued that even the original text is not the origin in the original sense, emphasizing the importance of “the sum of intentions that complement each other.” In other words, Benjamin's translation is an act closer to a third creation. Thus, in the artist's work, it is not important to explore what is fiction. The scattered state within the boundary between reality and fabricated stories may simply contain our ordinary selves. Minor destinies are rewritten for us daily. Just as the rustling sounds on the second floor of the exhibition space evoke a lazy lie-in or an erotic moment. Translation constantly occurs in unintended corners. You and I are beings who cannot touch without being translated. Isn't it true that someone's pupils can sometimes be clearer than a mirror? Choo Young-jin focuses on the playful nature of a key that can open anything, even though it can open nothing. The narratives within the work embrace each other, devour each other, striving to faithfully translate the day. Riding the waves of countless links, let us consider what to output. The precariousness of movement and displacement is more precise than a straight-line arrival.
