Corvus cornix · Irish: Feannóg (Caróg Liath)

Ireland's crow — ash-grey and black, and a true islander.

Habitat: Farmland, parks, coasts and towns — found virtually everywhere in Ireland. | Season: All year

Identification

Behaviour

Ireland's equivalent of the Carrion Crow, which barely reaches the island's eastern fringe — across almost all of Ireland the Hooded Crow fills this niche instead. Highly intelligent; often seen prising open shellfish or food waste.

Did you know?

Hooded Crows will sometimes drop shellfish or nuts from height onto hard ground to smash them open — a simple but effective use of a tool.
