🌡️ VPD Quick-Lookup Table

Temperature Humidity Approx. VPD (kPa) Status
18–20°C 50–65% ~0.6–0.9 Optimal / slightly low
22–24°C 50–65% 0.8–1.2 ✅ Optimal for most tropicals
26°C+ 40% >1.5 ⚠️ Stress — stomata closing
26°C+ 60–70% 0.9–1.2 ✅ Compensated — still optimal
30°C+ <50% >2.0 🔴 High stress — growth halts

Rule of thumb: every +2°C above 24°C needs roughly +5–10% relative humidity to keep VPD in the optimal band.

☀️ DLI Reference by Light Tier

Light Tier DLI Range (mol/m²/day) Typical Window Exposure
Low 3–8 North-facing window, >3m from any window
Medium 8–15 East-facing window, filtered south/west light
Bright indirect 15–25 Near unobstructed south/west window, no direct sun
High / Full sun 25–40+ South-facing window with several hours direct sun, or grow light

Seasonal note: a north-facing window can drop to 2–4 mol/m²/day in winter — below the survival threshold for most medium-light plants, even though it looks visually unchanged to the eye.

🪴 Soil Type Comparison

Soil Type Drainage Speed Water Retention Best For Watch Out For
Standard potting mix Medium Medium Most general houseplants Compacts after 12–18 months
Chunky mix (bark/perlite/pumice) Fast Low Aroids, Monstera, orchids, rot-prone species Dries out fast, needs frequent watering
Coco coir-based Medium–Fast Medium (even) Tropicals with moderate water needs Can dry unevenly if compacted
Sphagnum moss Slow High Epiphytes, some Anthuriums/Orchids Easy to overwater
LECA (semi-hydro) N/A (hydro) Controlled via reservoir Root-rot-prone species, pest control Requires nutrient solution, different watering logic entirely

🔧 Troubleshooting / FAQ

Q: My conditions look correct but growth is still slow — what am I missing? Check root health and soil compaction first. Both produce symptoms (yellowing, plateaued growth) that look identical to underwatering or low light, but aren't fixed by adjusting either.

Q: Is bright indirect light enough year-round? Not necessarily — the same light tier delivers a much lower DLI in winter due to shorter days, even from the same window. A "correct" light setting can still under-deliver seasonally.

Q: Why did my plant slow down even though I increased fertilizer? Fertilizer only helps during active growth phases. Feeding a plant in autumn/winter dormancy adds unused salts to the soil rather than fueling growth.
