Hey everyone, Shivani here! As a Product Manager at Ketto, I’m excited to share how a simple yet impactful idea of introducing a tipping feature on our donations website helped increase our Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) by an astonishing number. This journey not only highlights the power of innovative thinking but also underscores the importance of user experience and iterative improvements.
Identifying the Opportunity When I took on the role of managing our donations website, my primary goal was to increase GMV. We had a robust platform, passionate donors, and impactful campaigns, but I realized there was an untapped potential in maximizing the value from each transaction.
The Challenge Our Social Impact Fund Plan had a solid foundation, but it lacked that extra appeal to drive higher engagement and incremental value from our donors. Through several brainstorming sessions and market research, I found that most of our donors were willing to contribute more if there was an easy and clear way to do so without overwhelming commitment. The challenge was to strike a balance between asking for more and ensuring it was done seamlessly, without adding friction to the donation process.
**The Idea of Tipping
The Inspiration** Tipping is an ingrained practice in many cultures, but it’s often overlooked in the digital space outside of traditional services. I noticed successful implementations of tipping in other industries, from ride-sharing to content creation platforms. People were accustomed to tipping for good service, so why not bring that to charitable donations? This was a light-bulb moment.
Initial Research & Validation First, we needed to confirm that our user base would be receptive to the idea. We conducted surveys and user interviews to gauge donor attitudes towards tipping. Tools like Typeform and direct email solicitations helped us gather valuable feedback quickly. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive—many donors felt that tipping was a convenient way to provide extra support without committing to higher recurring donations. We also ran focus groups to validate this idea. It provided qualitative insights into how donors felt about tipping and how it could be integrated into the donation process without creating a negative experience.
**Implementation
Seamless Integration** Ensuring the new feature's integration would be user-friendly was crucial. We integrated the tipping option directly into the donation workflow. Here’s how we executed it: • User Flow: After a donor entered their donation amount, they were prompted with a simple, optional tipping interface. Using progressive disclosure, we explained how these tips helped cover operational costs and allowed more funds to reach the intended causes. • Design Considerations: Our design team worked tirelessly to keep the interface clean and intuitive. We used subtle animations and succinct copy to ensure users understood the tipping feature without feeling overwhelmed.
Suggested Tips and Custom Amounts To cater to different user preferences, we offered default tipping options (e.g., 5%, 10%, 15%) and also allowed donors to enter custom tip amounts. This flexibility was crucial. We made sure to underline the impact of even a small tip, reinforcing that any extra amount made a significant difference.
Technical Implementation Our development team ensured this feature was technically sound and seamlessly integrated: • Backend Adjustments: We needed to make several backend adjustments to handle the additional data and ensure everything was secure. We also set up servers to manage the spike in transactions we anticipated. • Frontend Development: This involved creating a fluid UI that worked well on both desktop and mobile devices. The simple interaction flow ensured that we kept donors within the funnel without additional steps causing drop-offs.
A/B Testing for Optimization To optimize the feature for maximum impact, we conducted several A/B tests: • Call-to-Action Text: We tested various messages to find the most effective call-to-action. • Tip Percentage Suggestions: We experimented with different suggested percentages to see which ones resulted in higher overall contributions. • Feature Placement: Various placements of the tipping prompt within the user journey were tested to minimize friction and maximize conversion.
Transparency to Build Trust Transparency was key to success. We made sure to clearly communicate how the tips would be used. This included statements like "Your tips help keep our platform running smoothly, ensuring more of your donation reaches those in need." To add credibility, we shared infographics and reports showing how tip funds were utilized.
Results and Learnings Impact on GMV The results were beyond our expectations. The tipping feature led to an additional revenue over the year. This not only boosted our GMV but also allowed us to reinvest in improving the platform and expanding our reach. User Feedback and Continuous Improvement Throughout the rollout, we collected continuous feedback from our users via surveys, feedback forms, and direct outreach. Some of the key learnings included: • Customization Matters: Many donors appreciated the ability to customize their tip amounts. It reinforced the importance of giving users control and flexibility. • Communication is Key: Clear communication about where their tips were going reassured donors and increased their willingness to contribute. • Seamless Experience: Maintaining a seamless donation experience was crucial. Any hesitation or confusion at the tipping stage could result in drop-offs.
Addressing Concerns While the majority feedback was positive, we also received constructive criticism. Some users felt uncomfortable with the tipping prompt. To address this, we added an option to opt-out of seeing the tipping prompt in future transactions, thereby ensuring that we were respectful of all users’ preferences.
Conclusion Key Takeaways • User-Centric Design: Understanding donor psychology was crucial. By aligning the tipping feature with user values and ensuring transparency, we gained their trust. • Iterative Approach: A/B testing and iterative improvements based on real user data made a significant difference. • Cross-Functional Collaboration: This success was a team effort, involving design, engineering, marketing, and customer support.
Looking Forward This experience reinforced my belief in the power of small yet strategic changes. The success of the tipping feature has opened up new avenues for future innovations aimed at enhancing user experience and driving growth.
