CHAPTER ONE

Journal #001 — The First Footsteps

The sea was unusually calm this morning.

The old fishermen used to say that calm seas make people careless.

I never asked them why.

The coffee tasted ordinary.

That's worth recording.

Ordinary things become surprisingly difficult to remember once strange things start happening.

The lighthouse light came on before sunset again.

I checked the mechanism twice.

Nothing appears to be wrong.

The seagulls gathered earlier than usual.

They spent most of the afternoon staring inland.

Not at the sea.

Curious.

Someone asked me today how long I've lived here.

I realised I couldn't give them an honest answer.

The journals have been here longer than I have.

Or perhaps...

I've simply forgotten the beginning.
