Alcedo atthis · Irish: Cruidín
An electric-blue flash along the water — one of Ireland's most dazzling birds.
Habitat: Slow rivers, canals, and larger ponds and lakes with fish and perches. | Season: All year
Watches from a low perch before diving headfirst for small fish; nests in a tunnel dug into a riverbank. Often seen only as a fast blue streak low over the water.
A Kingfisher needs to eat a very large share of its own body weight in fish every single day just to keep going, swallowing its catch whole and headfirst.
