<aside> ⚔️

The Liberation of Bethany was the first major offensive of Sun Jin Kaisara's rebellion against the Systems Alliance—the moment a scattered set of outer-rim grievances became a coordinated war. It unfolded across the middle and back half of 0032 and ended with the Alliance driven off the world of Bethany entirely.

Overview

Bethany was an ideal first target. As an outer-rim world it sat far from the Systems Alliance's true center of power, and the Alliance's grip there was always more claim than reality—a fleeting occupation rather than a rooted hold. Liberating it let the rebellion prove that the Alliance could be pushed off a world completely, turning a fragmented resentment into a credible movement.

Cause: unfair treatment on the outer rim

Bethany and its neighboring outer-rim worlds sat far from the Alliance's actual seat of power, yet still shouldered its demands—subject to Alliance authority without the protection, benefits, or fairness that authority was supposed to guarantee. Sun Jin Kaisara rallied these planets precisely because their frustration was already widespread; she gave a fragmented resentment a direction.

A coalition of weaker powers

None of these outer-rim worlds could challenge the Alliance alone. Their strength came from coordination: individually weaker militaries striking together, in concert, against Alliance strongholds—much of the time embedded within major cities. By synchronizing their offensives, the rebellion turned a collection of minor forces into a single, credible threat and overwhelmed garrisons that were never built to hold against a unified push.

Caisteal and Rio Narro

The closest planet to Bethany is Caisteal, a farming world in the same system and the home of Rio Narro. Caisteal had been massively exploited by the Systems Alliance, and it stood to suffer far worse: if the Alliance were not driven from Bethany quickly enough, Caisteal was poised to become the next staging ground for the Alliance's fight to hold Bethany.

That threat is what pushed Rio to join the war effort—not abstract ideology, but the concrete need to protect her farming planet before it was consumed by the battle next door. It was here, in the liberation fighting, that Rio first met Sun Jin Kaisara, an encounter that left a lasting personal imprint on her.

Timing

The fighting for Bethany unfolded across the middle and back half of 0032—roughly a year after Kaisara's father Tanuki was killed on Amber Krowe by the Systems Alliance's orbital weapon, Longinus. That loss is widely understood as the ignition point of Kaisara's rebellion; Bethany is where her grief-turned-purpose first took the field.

The offensive was also aided by a decisive blow Kaisara struck beforehand: she personally assassinated the head of the Systems Alliance Intelligence Services. The killing was an act of revenge—that official had authorized the Longinus strike against a civilian population in an attempt to kill Tanuki, an attack that ultimately killed only Tanuki, her father. Beyond vengeance, the assassination significantly hampered the Alliance's ability to coordinate its intelligence-driven defense against Kaisara, leaving its response fractured as the liberation began.

Gotanenks Armor's battlefield debut

Bethany was also the theater where Sun Jin Kaisara first prototyped and field-tested the Gotanenks Armor. In this early configuration it was far less sophisticated than the system it would later be brought up to at RD10-003: essentially just an armor shell—relic-grade ballistic protection—without the Spinal System, Dragon Fangs, wrist-knife feeder, or auxiliary blade racks of the mature kit. Its debut in the liberation battles (witnessed by Rio Narro) established Gotanenks as “real” on the battlefield well before it ever became a formal weapons program.

Strategic fallout

Bethany was more than a symbolic win—it cost the Systems Alliance a major staging ground for its outer reach. Losing it forced the Alliance to scramble, and one consequence rippled into its intelligence apparatus.

Already reeling from Kaisara's assassination of its intelligence chief, the Alliance now had to cover its exposed outer reach. At this point Ukatan had already been implanted within the Systems Alliance intelligence sphere, but had not yet risen to any rank or status of real consequence. The shock of Bethany changed that: the Alliance began rapidly promoting and recruiting new intelligence personnel—an accelerated pipeline that helped Ukatan climb far faster than he otherwise would have. In that sense, the liberation of Bethany indirectly greased the wheels of Ukatan's later ascent within Alliance intelligence.

Aftermath: a fleet hub and the birth of an empire

With Bethany secured, its orbit became a sizable staging ground for almost all of the outer rim area's fleet—a consolidation point where the rebellion's scattered forces gathered, coordinated, and resupplied. Far from a temporary muster, this orbital hub stayed and grew for over a decade, cementing Bethany's role as the strategic heart of the rebellion.
