Pica pica · Irish: Snag Breac
A bold black-and-white corvid with an iridescent sheen and a reputation.
Habitat: Parks, gardens, farmland and woodland edges. | Season: All year
Highly intelligent and adaptable; builds large domed stick nests and forms sizeable communal roosts outside the breeding season.
Magpies are one of the very few non-mammal species shown to recognise themselves in a mirror — a classic test scientists use to study animal intelligence.
