Assigned Week 5 · Workshopped Week 6 · Presented Week 7 · 20% of your grade

Design a complete visual communication project using generative AI as a creative collaborator. You choose the project type, the audience, and the design discipline. What you don't choose is whether your decisions are defensible — every one of them should be intentional, documented, and something you can explain out loud.

The goal is not to make the best AI images. The goal is to show that you can direct AI toward a strong design outcome.

Pick a lane

Brand identity · Poster campaign · Editorial design · Book or comic · Motion graphics · Illustration · Interactive prototype · Exhibition identity · Packaging · Data visualization · Wayfinding · Social campaign

Every concentration in the BFA has an option here. If your idea doesn't fit any of them, bring it to the Week 6 workshop and make the case.

What you turn in

  1. Final design. The finished work, in whatever medium you chose.
  2. Process book. This is the real assignment, and it is organized into the four D's — Discover, Define, Design, Develop. Show me the research you did before you made anything, the brief you wrote out of it, the ideas you abandoned, your prompts, your iterations, your failures and revisions, and why you changed direction when you did.
  3. Reflection, 300 words. One question: what could AI do well, and what could it never do for you?
  4. Five-minute presentation. Don't present your work. Present your decision making.

How it's graded

Process 40% · Final work 40% · Presentation 20%

A beautiful artifact with a thin process book won't do well here. A rougher artifact with a process book that shows real judgment can.

Keep asking yourself one question this semester: if someone else had your prompts, could they make your project? If the answer is yes, it probably isn't finished yet.
