Module 1: Instructing and Instructed

Conceptual framing

Drawing on Sol LeWitt’s instruction-based conceptual art, this module explores how instructions—as abstract codes—generate variability and interpretation in both human and machine execution. Instructions are never neutral; they entangle author, executor, and system.

Description

Students begin with analog exercises, writing and exchanging drawing instructions that are interpreted by others. These instructions are then translated into p5.js sketches, foregrounding computational thinking through abstraction, repetition, and randomness. By comparing human and machine interpretations, participants experience how execution always produces divergence. This module introduces algorithms and AI as interpretive collaborators, setting the foundation for the workshop series.
