Ah lads. What can you say? Honestly, what can you say about that? I'll try my best.
Started well enough, asked plenty of questions but absolutely no answers. I felt Young was shocking for all them corners the delivery was absolutely non existent.
Shame on me for starting to believe when Wehrly Bros got the equaliser. I feel Hughes is too nice, dya get me? Seems like too nice of a lad and you wouldn't really see him bounce off of lads as youd expect keepers to be. I do feel for him though, its quite clear Sargeant has been dropped, more than likely for personal reasons as in his personality was probably questioned, Esua seems to have been banished also. Although with Esua I'll concede, it was not the Esua we thought we were getting.
Some of the goals tonight were genuinely heart breaking to see but we've been seeing it all season and when you concede as much as we do, you don't deserve anything. We have showed up for periods in games but you simply can't treat a game part time and expect to get anything out of it.
Purse has managed to get these lads playing some sort of attacking football it seems but we just seem to capitulate in almost every game. I know he's a likeable character and he seems to be a straight talking shooter but I cant help but get caught up in my own head, is it him or the players? Now, we know how Russell left us and how befitting for him to leave us where we are and also act as the hammer that sends the nail down, figuratively and physically. Even he struggled to get something out of this squad and now Purse is suffering the same so it leaves me with no other option than to suggest many if not most of them are simply not up to it. Its hard to make a statement and say ah they didn't try or they don't care but I find that hard to spot on the pitch.
Do you know how I know theres a massive disconnect in the squad? You never, ever see them together off the pitch, with the exception of the yup bros Kavanagh and Nolan below in Ibiza there last week. I remember most weekends we played at home a few years ago, you'd always spot Morahan, Hutch, Manning and Denham out and about together, Will and Hakiki were often inseparable as well although I'm aware they lived together. I dno how many nights out i bumped into a few of them in Gracies but there was a togetherness and they'd always come and go together. Bar bumping into McManus outside Rovers Coffee there a few months ago and McElroy, whom I bump into alot and is a fucking gent may I add, you never see them. Saw Esua at mass one day and said hello and then felr very awkward after as we both went the same direction and he probably felt I was following him but I had to swing at the Lungy to avoid any suspicion 🤣 I dont know any of these lads and I know seeing lads in Ibiza before the penultimate game of the season should and does ring all alarm bells, but sure genuinely what harm has it caused?
I feel like many of them don't understand what the club means to the people of Sligo and just how important it is. All the wonderful people invovled in the club, hard work from volunteers etc and to go out like a wee sacrificial lamb is a real spit in the face to them, the club, the North West and Connaught. I would seriously have to question as to whether former pros who are still knocking around the town such as Peers and Elding were ever asked or were ever in contention to come in and have a word, provide guidance or straight up drive a boot up their hole? I doubt it. Now don't get me wrong, the players arent the only ones here to be held accountable, you know what im saying.
As a native to the town, Rovers have been our only sporting outlet, ever, you could argue. I could handle a last game of the season goal difference or loss to go down but I don't accept this and I'm not sorry for any of it. I don't accept it. The whole season has just felt like a black hole sucking the life out of us and I just cant wait for this season to be over. Many people will assume we'll come back up straight away but lads I have to be honest, if the ground work is not done more or less straight away at the end of the season, players aren't brought in and up etc there's a very good chance we will rot down there. But, that's easy to say and what's even easier to say is nobody knows. What we need is a wake up call, which the club has received and will suffer now as a result. Theres some players there have yet to earn their keep in this league, as such I suggest they come down with the ship and help get us back up. The optimist in me thinks we'll have a bit of Sex Appeal going down, provided we can remain full time, to entice players to join to get us back up as their segway to the top division, I dont think thats unrealistic to suggest. Where a real problem will emerge is that if 2 teams go down this year, that'll fairly take the sail out of you. So bearing all that in mind, you'd be hopeful.
I'll continue The Rovers Return until the end of the season because I wont quit, just to sicken myself. I always said I'd offer a bit of positivity but tonight was very hard to muster anything, just speaking straight as my thoughts form and maybe that's where ye can get a bit of morale. You won't have to worry about me going full negative Nelly, ill contain it🤣 Seeing as it's confirmed now, we'll have a bit of a laugh for the remainder of the few games. Will someone have a word with Purse as well and get him into Ejs ricky tick, can't be on the sidelines wearing that 🤣
