How to keep new subscribers consuming, engaged, and subscribed through the highest-risk cancellation window.

Why Onboarding Makes or Breaks Your Subscription

Most cancellations happen in the first 30 days. The three biggest reasons:

  1. They subscribed just to get the deal and never intended to stay
  2. They never formed a habit and forgot the product exists
  3. They have too much product, if they still have half a bag left why would they need more

Your job is to eliminate all three before day 30 hits. Get them consuming immediately, build the habit fast, and make sure they are running low at exactly the right time.

Customers who stay spend more over time. Getting someone to Month 3 instead of cancelling at Month 1 is not just one extra order, it is the difference between a $700 customer and a $1,000+ customer.

The Two Most Important Things in Onboarding

1. Optimise for consumption

Everything you send in the first 30 days has one goal: get them using the product every single day. Not reading about it. Not thinking about it. Using it. If they consume consistently they will run out at the right time, see results, and have a reason to reorder.

2. Set long-term expectations from day one

Most subscribers expect instant results. When they do not see them in week one they question whether it is working. Your emails need to reframe their thinking from short-term to long-term. Tell them early and tell them often: results compound over 30, 60, 90 days. The people who get the best results are the ones who stay consistent.

The Critical Windows

Days 1-10: Go hard

Highest-risk cancellation window. Send daily. Be intentional about every message. Your only job is to get them consuming before they make a cancellation decision.

Day 14: Two week check-in

First check-in after the daily sequence ends. How are they doing? What are they noticing? Remind them they are just getting started and the best results are ahead.

Day 25-28:Pre-billing reminder

A few days before the next charge hits. Non-transactional - focus on value, progress, and what is coming with their next order. Never make it feel like just a payment notification.

Day 30: Billing reminder

The biggest cancellation spike of the entire subscription. Have this email built and ready. See Section 3 - Retention for the full billing reminder framework.

Day 90: The loyalty threshold

Subscribers who make it to 90 days convert to long-term customers at dramatically higher rates. Everything is designed to get them here.

The Onboarding Email Sequence

Send daily for the first 10 days. Back off after that and become more intentional.

After Day 14

Back off significantly. Become intentional not frequent. The subscriber has made it past the highest-risk window, now your job is to keep them engaged and thinking long-term without overwhelming them.

SMS Onboarding

Same principles as email but send every 2 days not every day.
