POVs and HMWs translate research insights into design problems. Each POV names a specific user need grounded in research. Each HMW reframes that need as a design challenge. Each Design Strategy names the approach taken. Each Feature Response shows what was actually built.
This is the bridge between “what we learned” and “what we built.”
| Persona | POV | HMW Question | Design Strategy | Feature / System Response |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maya (Discovery) | Needs emotional connection before context | HMW allow visual experience before interpretation? | Visual-first information hierarchy | Hero artwork on homepage; image-dominant artwork pages |
| Maya | Needs context in small, digestible layers | HMW provide context without overload? | Progressive disclosure | Short intro blurbs + expandable “Read More” accordion |
| Maya | Needs help understanding motifs intuitively | HMW explain recurring imagery? | Theme-based interpretation system | Pillar pages + motif links on artworks |
| Maya | Moves from emotion → understanding | HMW guide deeper exploration naturally? | Layered narrative flow | Visual browse → theme → artwork → deeper context path |
| Samuel (Research) | Needs immediate historical positioning | HMW establish placement quickly? | Clear positioning framework | “Start Here” page + concise positioning statement on homepage |
| Samuel | Needs verifiable credibility | HMW structure scholarship and exhibitions? | Archive-style documentation | Exhibition history page + bibliography section |
| Samuel | Needs structured data | HMW present research-grade info? | Metadata system | Artwork info panels (year, medium, dimensions, period) |
| Samuel | Needs tone to signal authority | HMW signal credibility without drama? | Editorial voice guidelines | Neutral, precise content style — documented as platform-wide standard |
| Both | Users engage visually but also need context | HMW balance art and scholarship? | Dual-layer architecture | Visual browsing + research navigation coexist in same IA |
| Both | Two user modes exist | HMW support discovery + research paths? | Dual-entry IA | Discovery vs. research pathways; switchable at any point |
| Both | Historical themes can be misinterpreted | HMW present sensitive history respectfully? | Tone and content standards | Reflective writing, art-led interpretation throughout |
| Both | Repetition needs explanation | HMW make conceptual continuity legible? | Motif interpretation framework | “Why these themes repeat” — explanatory Motifs section |
POV: Maya needs help understanding recurring imagery intuitively. Nelly raised this directly in interviews: she revisits sites to discover relationships between works.
HMW: How might we explain recurring imagery without reducing it to a taxonomy?
What was built: Two systems. The Motifs section presents the artist's recurring subjects as five cards (Ox/Cow/Bird · Roads · Labor · Land · Village) plus a tojŏng technique radar — making the visual vocabulary explorable. The deeper synthesis (five recurring motifs distilled into three thematic pillars — Figures of Memory, Landscape as Witness, Surface of Time) became the Exhibition Plan's curatorial structure. Theme links on artwork detail pages connect to both.
Why it matters: This was the single strongest design differentiator confirmed in prototype testing. All four industry professionals responded to it beyond satisfaction level.
POV: Two user modes exist — neither can be collapsed into the other without damaging both experiences.
