  1. Text for solo exhibition <LIARS> (2022, space Uooyoung, Seoul)

There are images, stories, and structures. Each element neither converges into one nor separates into individual fragments. The narrator designed it so that attempting to describe a single image causes one or more stories to attach themselves. Therefore, we can see everything but cannot read everything. We merely witness a scene cut from the original and grafted onto another event. Choo Young-jin focuses on “the sense of regulating the weight of narrative.” The artist's interest in narrative and image is less a sudden emergence at a specific work and more akin to layered sedimentary strata. The most intriguing point lies in how this alluvial material is utilized. The artist occupies the position of both consumer and re-producer of their own work. Like secondary creations—parody novels spreading across the web—Chu Young-jin's works, images, and stories do not remain fixed at a single point but continually shift focus. A painting from some time ago appears as a decorative element in a photograph; a recited story sheds its form through gesture. An empty hotel room, the life of the anonymous guest who stayed there, a single painting hanging above the bed. A photograph of the hotel room, a story about someone, a house within a rearranged painting. Media and frames reset to suit the protagonist connect Choo Young-jin's entire artistic world through a discontinuous narrative. Let us grasp the threads of this narrative as if running over springs. We must remember that a spring is a circle, a line, and an intersecting point. Every image in <LIARS> functions as a copy-pasted link and a fragment of an event, adding ambiguity to the story while hinting at unexpected connections. Here, clear references or interpretations lose their weight. They merely serve as buoys suggesting ‘an event is unfolding,’ deferring completion.
