About

• In this class, you’ll learn No-Limit Hold’em cash game strategy from a high-stakes online pro in a relaxed yet rigorous classroom format with lectures and homework readings.
• In addition to the lectures, each meeting will contain playing time for students to socialize and play poker against one another through their web browser.
  • Since there’s no substitute for real-money practice, students are strongly encouraged to self-organize playing for real money, even if for small amounts.
  • The student with the highest winrate at the end of the term will win a cash prize .
• We’ll assume no prior familiarity with poker strategy. But…
  • You must know the rules and hand rankings of No-Limit Hold’em, or learn them by heart before enrolling. The class will assume fluency.
  • While we won’t do a ton of math, familiarity with game theory, probability, and expected value helps.
• Homework readings will come from a textbook-style interactive course in poker strategy written by the instructor. Students will have access for the duration of the class.
• Casuals looking to socialize and learn for fun are just as welcome as ambitious amateurs looking to jump-start a side-hustle!

How good will you get at poker in this class?

That depends on how much work you do outside of class. The instructor estimates that:

• If you put in significant time outside of class, retain everything in the curriculum, and memorize the preflop charts, you’ll be good enough to earn a small side income profiting in soft games at casinos and cardrooms (or at low-stakes online), and be set up exceptionally well to make further progress.
• If you attend for fun and put in no outside work (which is totally fine!), you’ll leave the class with a richer understanding of poker theory and be better than a large majority casual players, but probably not good enough to win in real-money games after the rake (with the exception of online microstakes and some exceptionally soft live games).
• All players who take the class should expect to leave with a substantial edge over the competition they’ll find in casual home games.
