Gavia stellata · Icelandic: Lómur

A slim, elegant diver with an eerie wailing call.

Habitat: Small moorland pools and lochs | Season: Apr–Oct

Identification

Behaviour

Nests right at the water's edge on tiny pools, then flies out to feed at sea. Gives an eerie, wailing call.

Did you know?

Because its legs are set so far back for diving, a Red-throated Diver can barely walk on land and must nest within a step of the water.
