About the role
As Odin grows, we are hiring a Senior Platform Engineer — Edge Systems to build the software that connects jobsites to Odin's cloud. You will work where cameras, access-control readers, rugged devices, local compute, and constrained networks meet the platform, making those integrations reliable enough for product teams to build on.
This is a hands-on Platform Engineering role with an emphasis on Edge Systems. Product engineers are your customers, and success means they can use footage, access events, and other site data without each team solving hardware integration, local processing, or unreliable connectivity for itself. You will shape and lead projects, contribute directly to the software and infrastructure, and own what those projects deliver through production.
What you will do
- Shape and lead Edge Systems projects from a defined customer or platform problem through production. Compare approaches, surface constraints and risks, and turn the work into a plan other engineers can contribute to.
- Design, build, and operate software that runs on edge controllers and connects third-party cameras, access-control readers, and other site hardware to Odin's platform.
- Build integrations around device protocols and real-time data streams, with clear contracts that keep vendor-specific behavior out of product applications.
- Ingest and process video and event data locally. Design buffering, local storage, synchronization, and recovery so the system preserves useful data when connectivity is slow, intermittent, or unavailable.
- Make deliberate tradeoffs across bandwidth, latency, compute, storage, reliability, security, and operating cost for sites using cellular, satellite, or other constrained networks.
- Build the cloud services and infrastructure that receive, store, and expose edge data, and make those capabilities safe and straightforward for product engineers to use.
- Create reliable ways to deploy, observe, diagnose, update, and recover edge workloads across a distributed fleet without requiring routine access to the jobsite.
- Protect footage, access events, credentials, and device identity in transit, at rest, and during local processing. Design access and retention controls into the system rather than adding them after deployment.
- Operate what you build. Participate in the on-call rotation, lead the resolution of critical incidents in your area, and turn what the team learns into changes that reduce the chance or impact of recurrence.
- Write documentation and runbooks that let other engineers operate and extend the systems without depending on you. Help engineers grow through design reviews, technical writing, pairing, and direct feedback.
- Build first-hand knowledge of how Odin's customers work. Visit jobsites, sit with workers and security teams, and watch the product in use in a guard booth or trailer. Carry that understanding into the platform tradeoffs you make.
What we are looking for
- You have built and operated production software that runs on Linux-based or comparable hardware outside a conventional cloud environment.
- You can show how you designed for intermittent connectivity, bounded compute or storage, remote diagnosis, and recovery when the hardware could not be reached directly.
- You have integrated software with third-party hardware, device protocols, or real-time streams and can explain how you isolated vendor behavior and handled incompatible or incomplete inputs.
- You understand the networking behind device-to-cloud systems, including connection lifecycle, bandwidth constraints, authentication, retries, ordering, and synchronization after an interruption.
- You have owned a substantial platform or distributed-systems project from problem definition and technical design through staged rollout and production operation.
- You have led engineers through project delivery. You can explain how you divided the work, kept decisions and risks visible, and ensured the pieces became one dependable result.
- You bring enough breadth across backend development, cloud infrastructure, delivery systems, observability, and security to make an edge capability part of a reliable shared platform rather than an isolated device integration.
- You have defined useful health and reliability measures, diagnosed complex production failures, and improved a distributed system after learning how it failed.
- You make technical decisions by comparing real alternatives across reliability, security, cost, delivery speed, and operational complexity. You can explain the choice clearly and change course when new evidence warrants it.
- You communicate clearly in writing and conversation. Your technical plans, runbooks, incident updates, and tradeoff discussions leave people able to act.
- You use AI to accelerate your engineering without outsourcing your judgment. You understand, test, and refine the work it helps produce, and you answer for the code you ship.
Nice to have
- Experience building and operating video-streaming systems, video storage, or computer-vision pipelines in production.
- Experience deploying and operating machine-learning inference on constrained or intermittently connected hardware.
- Experience integrating Avigilon, C•CURE 9000, ONVIF-conformant network cameras, access-control panels, badge readers, or similar physical-security systems.
- Experience operating production systems over cellular, satellite, or other variable jobsite networks.
- Experience managing connected-device fleets, including staged rollout, remote updates, device health, replacement, and recovery.
- Experience with construction technology, access control, workforce management, or other software and hardware used on a jobsite.
- Experience at an early-stage startup where you established a new technical capability while continuing to ship production work.
