Full-time and Remote in Europe/Hybrid
About Agreena
Agreena is an exciting, dynamic and purpose-oriented organisation united in a mission to drive impact for farmers and the climate. While we’re rooted in agriculture, finance and technology, our team of experts range from soil carbon scientists and software developers to market strategists and regulatory affairs experts. More than 15 nationalities are gathered under the Agreena flag – either working from our headquarters in Copenhagen or remotely across Europe.
Our company offers a supportive and positive work environment with opportunities for learning, leading and growth no matter where you are in your professional journey. We believe in giving our employees a lot of responsibility, and we encourage new thinking, innovation and fun.
And this is where you come in:
You will be the critical bridge between soil carbon science and production engineering, serving as a core architect of Agreena’s Carbon Calculation engine. This isn’t a standard software role—it requires a unique blend of scientific literacy and robust data and modelling craftsmanship.
To succeed as our Research Software Engineer, you will balance two core realities:
- Guarding the Science: You will deeply understand the scientific models behind soil carbon and regenerative agriculture. You’ll ensure that our code maintains absolute scientific integrity, ensuring that calculation inputs are accurate, verifiable, and scientifically sound.
- Wrangling the Data: You will dive into complex data transformation challenges. Our datasets live across shifting temporal views (historical, seasonal, and real-time tracking, ) with requirements and schemas evolving year-on-year.. You will build the logic that seamlessly harmonizes these timelines, blending internal platform data with external environmental and geographic sources.
How will you make an impact:
- Collaborate with scientists, modellers and engineers to design and implement solutions for research software development.
- Design and help manage the infrastructure for an effective software development environment.
- Develop, test and maintain custom software tools (predominantly R and Python packages)
- Optimise existing software code to improve performance and scalability.
- Build data pipelines and support model development and operations in coordination with data engineers and scientists.
- Document software design, implementation, and user guides for internal users.
Who we’re looking for:
- A diverse background that bridges science and engineering. We welcome different professional pathways, such as:
- A quantitative academic background (e.g., physics, mathematics, climate science) followed by practical software engineering experience.
- A software or data engineering background with experience working in a research environment.
- A data science background with strong R and Python skills, paired with a solid grasp of (or a desire to master) formal software engineering principles.
- Scientific Computing & Engineering:
- Strong programming proficiency in both R and Python.
- Deep experience with scientific computing libraries and frameworks (e.g., Tidyverse, NumPy, SciPy, or similar).
- Experience engineering for compute-intensive problems, utilizing either HPC or cloud-based infrastructure (GCP/AWS).
- Collaboration: Strong communication skills and the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary, research-driven environment.
