Better Future Media builds narratives that challenge extractive systems and steer society towards a more regenerative future. We cover stories of a better future across 3 focus areas:

• New Economic Systems: the economic movements and policies that support life within planetary limits
• Power & Movements: the constituencies, campaigns, and organizing efforts working to change the system, from electoral politics to grassroots movements
• Planetary Wellbeing: grounded in the premise that ecological and human wellbeing are inseparable, covering the work of ecological restoration and building a world where both humanity and nature can thrive

We create media that meets people where they already are – across the platforms billions of people use to make sense of the world today – and moves them towards a deeper understanding of the systems shaping their lives.

The Role

We're looking for a Staff Writer & Editor who can write and edit compelling original Substack articles for the Better Future Media brand. This role requires strong, research-backed writing with a clear point of view, grounded in the ideas and values driving our brand. Over time, the role could expand into additional writing, such as scriptwriting for videos and copywriting for our social media channels.

This is a part-time contract role, starting at 8-15 hours per week with room to grow as the organization scales. Since launching in May, Better Future Media has already gained millions of views on social media; our Substack is the long-form editorial home we’re building on top of this foundation. The person who fills this role will be getting in on the ground floor of a media brand with momentum and ambitious plans for the future.

You'll work closely with our Founder and CEO, Michael Mezzatesta, and Head of Operations, Danielle Lee.

What You'll Do

• Identify and research stories worth covering – monitoring incoming pitches and tracking developments across new economic systems, political power, and planetary wellbeing
• Research topics thoroughly before writing, including sourcing and fact-checking statistics and claims
• Write original Substack articles for Better Future Media – compelling, evidence-driven pieces that connect current events to systemic causes and surface real alternatives
• Edit article concepts developed by our team into polished, ready-to-publish versions
• Ghostwrite articles and social media posts for our founder, Michael, capturing his tone and style while maintaining the ideological framing of the publication
• Work with Michael to develop story angles, refine arguments, and iterate on drafts
• Maintain consistency with the BFM editorial identity across everything you publish
