Sturnus vulgaris · Irish: Druid
Glossy, gregarious, and a spectacular flier in the winter sky.
Habitat: Gardens, farmland, town squares and reedbed roosts. | Season: All year
Famous for murmurations — huge swirling winter flocks that gather before roosting; an excellent mimic of other birds and mechanical sounds.
Starlings are gifted mimics, capable of copying car alarms, phones and other birds' songs, and their vast swirling winter murmurations are thought to help confuse predators like the Sparrowhawk.
