Official’s Uniform and Necessities

Looking the Part: Why Appearance Matters

Your appearance is your first impression. It’s what people see before you blow the whistle, shake a coach’s hand, or make your first call.

A clean, pressed, and professional uniform communicates that you take pride in your role and can be trusted to manage the game.

Players, coaches, and spectators will immediately judge your credibility based on how you look. Dressing professionally earns respect before the ball is even tipped.

Uniform Standards: The Basics

Every basketball official’s uniform includes a few key items:

Shirts

Start with two staple shirts that will cover most levels of play:

  1. Classic 1-inch black-and-white striped shirt (without a collar — the basketball standard).
  2. Light gray pinstriped or solid gray w/ black shoulders shirt – adaptable for recreation, intramural, adult, and middle school levels.

As you advance, higher levels (like high school varsity, college, or pro-am) often require officially branded shirts with conference or association logos such as the GHSA (Georgia High School Association). Always check with your assignor or association before working a new league.
