When you begin officiating, especially at the youth or recreational level, mistakes will happen. You’ll make them, and so will the players. Young athletes are still learning the rules of basketball, developing coordination, and figuring out how to play.
That’s why one of the most valuable tools you can develop early on is common sense.
Common sense officiating means understanding that context matters. Not every level of play should be officiated the same way. It’s about balancing fairness, empathy, and judgment to create the best possible experience for everyone involved.
Each league may have its own modified rules based on player age and experience. For example:
You might not personally agree with every modification, but your job is to apply the rules that are in place. These modifications help players learn the fundamentals in a controlled, supportive environment.
At the youngest levels, you’re not just an official. You’re part teacher, part mentor.
Your role is to help kids learn and enjoy the game, not to penalize every small mistake.
