Timeouts are one of the most frequent administrative stoppages in a basketball game. When handled properly, they allow teams to reset without disrupting game flow. This sublesson explains who may request a timeout, how to properly grant and report it, and how officials should manage timeouts from start to finish.
Who Can Request a Timeout and When
Under NFHS rules:
- A timeout may be granted during a live ball to the team in possession
- A timeout may be granted to either team during a dead ball
At the NCAA and professional levels, rules differ regarding:
- Who may request a timeout
- When a timeout may be granted
Officials must know the rules for the level they are working.
Granting and Signaling a Timeout
When a timeout may legally be granted, follow this sequence:
- Raise your hand to stop the clock
- Point to the team requesting the timeout
- Ask the coach what length of timeout they want
- Inform the opposing coach of the timeout length
- Allow all players to reach their benches
- Do not start the timeout while players are still walking
- The requesting team is entitled to the full amount of time
- Watch players crossing paths to the bench and be alert for unsportsmanlike contact
