Most of the ‘common knowledge’ about The Gut is hearsay, myth, rumor, and urban legend. The only factual evidence that is available to the public is the knowledge that it exists. In 2181, the 4th State Council announced the “Sub-Transit Alliance Program” associated with the Ground-burrow Union Team (aka the GUT): a 60 year initiative to renovate and expand the current abandoned subway system. The expansion would not just give routes with better reach to new parts of the city, but also a subterranean city where the workers building and renovating the system could live. No commute, families got a free living space, and the time saved would keep the project efficiently on track. Eventually, the underground was planned to be a lively getaway full of prosperity.
But people started going missing at an alarming rate as the tracks got laid. Rumors that the entire project was cursed, haunted, or just plain unlucky sucked the crucial funding away from the Gut. The workers and their families by and large had nowhere to move after giving up everything for the exciting prospect of a new job with luxurious living. By 2230, the city enacted a non-profit initiative to relocate those still living underground and shut down the Sub-Transit Alliance Program for good.
However, even those efforts were cut off by 2231 when multiple witnesses were attacked by things they could only describe as wrong or monstrous. To protect the civilians of New City, a new task force of Wariem was established to guard the Gut relentlessly. It remains one of the most prestigious/elite branches of the Wariem witches to this day.
